As a business owner or senior manager, it is important to maintain a sustainable balance between your personal life and business life. Feeding one side more than the other generally leads to poor performance from the side that has little or less attention.
In my business I work with clients who have problems with how they look, feel and move. Generally, the biggest cause of these problems is work and work-related stress.
After unravelling these issues, we utilise exercise as an intervention to help clients with their issues and improve their quality of life. We have found that those who practise regular exercise perform better in most aspects of life.
Before committing to exercise and starting your health and fitness journey, let's understand stress and how it can physically impact the body, and how exercise can manage stress.
What is ‘stress’?
Stress refers to ‘a state of disharmony [in the body] in response to a real or perceived threat or challenge’.
In simpler terms, stress can impact the body’s self-regulation process. The body will think there is a threat and go into a ‘fight or flight’ process. This process increases heart rate levels, blood pressure, perspiration and energy production, just to name a few.
If this happens regularly it can be exhausting on the body.
Negative, acute symptoms of stress include headaches, sleep disturbances, lack of concentration and fatigue.
Additionally, chronic effects of stress include cardiovascular disease, obesity, depression and anxiety.
Exercise – a tool for stress relief and improved quality of life
From a business perspective, it is vital to have an outlet if you work in a high-stress environment.
Exercise is an effective way to reduce stress responses and improve overall quality of life. Studies have identified that just 20 to 30 minutes of exercise can assist with feeling calmer and more relaxed.
Other physical and mental health benefits of exercise include:
- weight loss
- improved cardiovascular efficiency
- improved bone, joint and muscular health
- increased range of movement
- reduction in underlying comorbidities, such as diabetes and heart disease
- improved cognitive function and sleep
- decreased anxiety and depression
- enhanced feelings of wellbeing
- strengthened joints, bone structure and improved mobility.
